The Adventures of Motherhood

I had a scary experience today. We were going to Target, the kids and I. Don't ask my why I would go with all four. It is a question I just can't answer. Anyway, as I was getting out to go around the van, two of my girls were fighting. One of them, whose name I won't mention, pulled Emma's hair just as Emma was putting a bite-size muffin in her mouth. Her head was pulled back, causing her to choke on the muffin. I didn't realize it. She just went quiet and I thought, "Gee, she got over that quick." So I mozey around to the other side only to look inside and see Emma's head bright red, mouth open, tongue out, hands on neck. I start yelling for her to spit it out as I take her and do something sort of similar to the Heimlich. It was enough to allow her enough air to cough and gag to spit the muffin out.

It was so scary and I just keep thinking about all the ways it could have gone wrong. What if I had gone over to get a shopping cart before getting the kids out, or what if I had strapped Rex in a shopping cart before I got Emma out? There was a really nice lady in the parking lot who came over to see if we were okay. I was a little shaky and still freaked out, so I don't know if I responded to her appropriately. I just wanted to make sure she knew I was saving my child and not hitting her...what with all the screaming going on, she might not have been able to tell!
